Porsche Design has introduced its latest Chronograph 1, the “All Black Numbered Edition,” a modern tribute to the iconic Chrono I from 1972, created by 911 designer F. A. Porsche. The timepiece integrates contemporary technology with the classic design ethos of its predecessor, providing both Porsche enthusiasts and watch aficionados with a functional yet stylish accessory — a 911 for the wrist.
Like the recently unveiled Hodinkee x Porsche Design Chronograph 1, the watch is crafted with precision at Porsche’s watch factory in Solothurn, Switzerland. Signature features of the All Black edition include a matte black dial with the current Porsche Design logo, crown and clasp. The watch boasts a sevenfold anti-reflective sapphire crystal, ensuring optimal readability and is waterproof up to 10 bar. It also integrates a sapphire crystal case back that showcases the Porsche Design icon winding rotor.
The design, inspired by the cockpit instruments of the Porsche 911, focuses on maximum functionality and readability. The tachymeter scale, date display in Porsche Design font and the distinctive rectangular minute hand with a precision tip highlight this commitment. Notably, the timepiece has a 40.8 mm diameter titanium case with a black titanium carbide coating and a 48-hour power reserve.
Ferdi Porsche the head of F.A.T. International and nephew of F.A. Porsche, said “I find it insane to think this design came out in 1972, it was the first black watch back then. To me, it still looks like you could launch this thing nowadays as a new watch — the timelessness of it is one of the things I find most fascinating”
”I really love wearing the Chrono 1 because it’s a special watch but it still flies under the radar. It’s an ‘iykyk’ kinda thing and nobody will judge you for wearing a flashy watch. Because of that, it was actually the watch that got me into wearing a watch on a daily basis. Admittedly, because it felt like home wearing it.”
Limited to 1,000 pieces per year, the Chronograph 1 – All Black Numbered Edition is designed to be more than a watch but rather a statement of Porsche’s heritage and design excellence. The watch, priced at $9,650 USD, is available to order at the time of writing through Porsche Design’s official site.
