Game 2 of the NBA Finals is on tap Sunday with the hometown Boston Celtics looking to extend their lead over the Dallas Mavericks following a Game 1 smackdown of 107-89 which doesn’t do justice to how dominant the Bean Town crew was.
Season Series
In history, the Celtics own the advantage of winning 46 of the club’s 86 meetings. Both this season and last the Celtics swept the two-game season series.
This is the first time the clubs are meeting in the postseason as the Celtics have their eyes set on an NBA-best 18th championship banner while the Mavericks are making just their third trip to the Finals having split the two prior opportunities.

In two of the three prior series the Mavericks fell in the first game but rebounded with a win in Game 2. They’ll need to emulate that success or risk the necessity to win four of the next five games.

Coming into the Finals there was ample discussion about the path Boston took to reach this point. They could only play the teams in front of them but they hadn’t been tested in the same manner as the Mavericks who played the top, third and fourth seeds in the West.
Game 1 certainly put those thoughts on hold but the players were still laser-focused in the post-game press citing what happened three years ago when they won Game 1 versus the Warriors only to lose the series.
Jaylen Brown in particular seemed to be leading that narrative following what was arguably the best performance by any player in Game 1.
Brown scored 22 points, grabbed six rebounds, and dished three assists. However, his defense was the key with three steals and three blocks and his individual defense on Doncic was stellar.
Unlike their opponent, the Celtics had the ball zipping around the floor shooting 47.6% from the field and connected on 16 triples (38.1%).
Kristaps Porzingis returned igniting the Celts in a reserve roll scoring 20 points and grabbing six rebounds in just 21 minutes of action.

Boston ranked first offensively (122.2) and was second defensively (110.6) while registering a net differential of plus +111.7 which also ranked first overall.
Through the postseason, the Celtics rank second offensively (119.3) and third defensively (107.8) with a plus +11.5 net differential that ranks first overall.

Of note the two games the Celtics lost in the previous series were in Game 2 while the Mavericks have won all three of their prior Game 2’s including two after losses.
Jason Kidd has expertly made the requisite tweaks after losses although the question is how much is fixable?
Sure Irving and Doncic can play better while the team can move the ball better and space the floor better but Kidd can’t change the height of the Celtics wings who shadowed his stars in Game 1. That will fall upon Irving and Doncic.
I’m taking the points again because a loss would likely equate to a short series which is the last thing the league wants.
