Wednesday serves up the first match of the Western Conference Finals between the Dallas Mavericks and Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Mavericks arrive having defeated the OKC Thunder in six games including a single point victory (117-116) to clinch their berth while the Wolves went the distance unseeding the reigning champions by erasing a 20-point deficit en route to a 98-90 win in Game 7.
Season Series
Last season the Wolves held the advantage, winning two of the three regular-season meetings and were equally successful this season taking the series 3-1. Dallas holds the all-time record between the squads with 77 victories in 136 matches.
The teams met just once before in the postseason in 2002 when first-round series were the best of five games with Dallas sweeping 3-0.

Dallas Mavericks
By closing out their semi-finals in six games the Mavericks got a couple extra days of rest. That might not seem like much but with Luka Doncic dealing with a myriad of injuries every extra day is critical.
Through the two rounds they’ve played Dallas has relied on physical, aggressive defense to win games but now will face a worthy opponent who was the top-ranked defense in the regular season and also ranks higher this postseason.
Defensive matchups will be critical as Dallas will deal with a Wolves team with a trio of bigs, unlike anything they’ve faced in the previous series.
Mavericks Stats
Dallas ranked eighth offensively (117.0) and 18th in defensive rating (114.9) with a net differential of plus +2.1 that ranked 15th overall.
To this point in the playoffs, Dallas ranks seventh offensively (113.9) and sixth defensively (110.6) with a plus +3.3 net differential ranking fifth.
The Mavericks perform well against the spread with a 55-39 record through 94 contests this season.
Mavericks Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Luka Doncic, PG (probable — knee)
- Maxi Kleber, PF (OUT indefinitely — shoulder)
- Olivier-Maxence Prosper, PF (OUT indefinitely —ankle)
Minnesota Timberwolves
After years of struggles to make the playoffs, the Wolves are arguably the biggest postseason story. They swept the Suns then took out the reigning champions winning three times in Denver including their masterful defensive victory in Game 7.
While Anthony Edwards had a poor shooting night (6 of 24) in the clinching match he hit timely shots and was a beast defensively. The enigmatic, charming 22-year-old is the definitive leader and has his entire team believing they can win the title.
A perfect example is Karl-Anthony Towns whose playoff history features copious choking in big games, but AntMan has him finally playing to his potential including defensively.
Timberwolves Stats
Through the regular season, Minnesota ranked tied for 17th on offense (120.8) and first defensively (105.5) while they were a plus +15.3 net differential, ranking third overall.
In the playoffs, the Wolves rank sixth offensively (116.1), and fourth defensively (107.6) with a plus +8.5 net differential ranking second overall.
The Wolves rode the middle with a 48-44-1 record against the spread through 93 matches this season.

Free Dallas Mavericks vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction:
While the East has the top two offensive clubs waging battle the West features two of the better defenses. Although the Wolves won the season series they didn’t face Minny after the trade deadline when they added PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford.
That said, despite the Mavericks’ chilling defense they’ll be dealing with a team that has a standout defender to counter every position. They held Denver under 100 points in all four of their victories and torched them in Game 6 with a plus-45 differential.
Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving are tapped as the top duo remaining in the postseason reasonably so since they are both All-Stars who can take over a game and have ample experience.
However, the Wolves can put Jaden McDaniels and Edwards on them plus have a trio of quality bigs that can defend and spread the floor which could prove problematic for Gafford and rookie Dereck Lively II.
Arguably this series will be decided in the paint where both teams excel on the glass and rim protection. Dallas had great success in the prior two rounds but faced the undersized Suns and Thunder whereas the Wolves are lengthy at every position.
After losing both opening home games to the Nuggets in the semis, Chris Finch will undoubtedly motivate his squad to protect its home court.
As noted, Doncic and Irving can win a game all on their own but I’m tapping the surprising Wolves and Edwards to win the series in six games.
One of the biggest shocks about the semis was how Minny systematically shut down all the Nuggets support players so I anticipate Washington and Derrick Jones Jr. won’t be as successful in this round.
To that end, I’m taking the Wolves to win Game 1 and cover.
