The defending race champ, that win for Elite Power came in the midst of an eight-race winning streak that was only snapped last out when he came up short in the (G1) Forego Stakes at Saratoga going 7 furlongs.
He’s not the fastest out of the gate and typically tracks off the pace before making a powerful move down the stretch. To that end there’s not a ton of early speed in this race and he may be forced to be a bit more forward than is typical.

Making only his second start of the year – and sixth overall – Speed Boat Beach started his career with a maiden win on dirt, switched to turf where he won twice, and then got back on the dirt when running second in the (G2) Santa Anita Sprint Championships.
The jury may still be out as to which is his best surface, but he’s been training lights out on the dirt to get ready for this.

After suffering a pair of losses to Elite Power, Gunite managed to turn the tables on that one last out in the (G1) Forego. Following that he ran second in the Parx Dirt Mile on a wet track, but finished ahead of a rival that has since come back to win.
Now he gets back to a distance where he’s finished in the money in all six tries, with three wins.
Dr. Schivel Race Odds: 5-1
After just missing winning this race by a nose in 2021, Dr. Schivel only ran once in 2022 and has been up-and-down this year with a pair of wins to go with a third-place finish and an off the board finish.
He got back to the winner’s circle last out in taking the SA Sprint Championships by a head despite a bobble at the gate. He has six wins in nine starts at the distance, and four wins in six starts on the Santa Anita dirt.

While Speed Boat Beach and a couple others could show some early speed, on paper it appears that Gunite should be setting the pace here, and there’s a scenario whereby that’s all he might need to take this field gate-to-wire. Although he didn’t win last out, he did run very well on a track and at a distance that is probably not his best. Otherwise he appears to be at the top of his game.
I’ll play him for the win, and out of respect for his back class use Elite Power in the exacta.
