- Oculus VR headsets are not meant for anyone under the age of 13.
- You can use an Oculus VR headset without a Facebook account by creating a Meta account.
- A child’s Oculus account can be supervised by parents by linking their accounts in Family Center.
When Facebook acquired Oculus for $2 billion in 2014, the virtual reality company founded by Palmer Luckey was at the forefront of the field.
Since Facebook’s rebranding to Meta in 2021, the Oculus brand has been absorbed and is now called “Meta VR.” Starting last year, it became possible once again to use an Oculus headset without needing to have a Facebook or Instagram account. Here’s how.
Oculus headsets can allow up to four total accounts to have on an Oculus headset at any given time. While secondary accounts can still purchase games and use apps, they are not able to connect their Oculus account to the Oculus mobile app. In reality, this means that they are unable to use Oculus Casting or any other app-tied functions.
How to create a Meta account
Though it was not the case until August 2022, it is now possible to create a Meta account without necessarily needing to have a Facebook account. You can create an account by using the Oculus signup page, choosing the Set up account with email option and filling in the requested details.
Quick tip: When you order your headset you will get a code delivered by email. Use this 8 digit code to pair your headset with your account at meta.com/device.
How do I create an Oculus account for my child?
Oculus accounts for your child can be created as you would a normal Meta account, provided that the child is 13 or older. Meta has stated that Meta VR systems must not be used by children under the age of 13 and recommends that parents monitor the use of their teenagers. Assuming that your child is over 13, there are two options to link your teen’s account to your own for parental supervision:
- The teen must invite the parent or guardian to connect to their Meta account.
- The parent or guardian can invite their teens to connect in the Family Center.
