The Detroit Tigers vanquished the AL West-winning Houston Astros in two games to earn a date with the Cleveland Guardians. It’s their first trip to the ALDS since 2014 when they were swept in three gamed vs. the Baltimore Orioles. This year’s version of the Orioles couldn’t get out of the Wild Card Series, falling to the Kansas City Royals. Now, Bobby Witt Jr. & Co. will look to topple the giant by overcoming steep odds to beat the New York Yankees.
Over in the National League, we’re still waiting for the Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets to determine who will play the Philadelphia Phillies. Then, the Los Angeles Dodgers will square off against their dreaded NL West rivals, the San Diego Padres in the most exciting DS matchup… at least on paper.

2024 MLB Playoffs format
In 2022, Major League Baseball introduced a new twist to the postseason.
The participant pool was increased to 12 teams, a jump from the previous 10. Gone is the single-elimination Wild Card Game, replaced by a best-of-three Wild Card Series.
Seeding is a crucial part of this format, with teams earning their positions based on their regular-season records. The highest-performing two seeds (each a division winner) get a pass directly to the Division Series.
The tension builds during the Wild Card Series, where the higher-seeded teams get home-field advantage. The winners move on to the Division Series, and the losers start their winter break.
Post Wild Card Series, reseeding does not take place, but the Division Series maintains its best-of-five games structure.
The regular-season record sets the seeding for the World Series: the team with the best record enjoys the home-field advantage.
