2023 Chilukki Stakes Handicapping
With the 2023 Breeders’ Cup World Championships in the rearview mirror, we’re somewhat into the dog days of the North American racing calendar. Most northern tracks are wrapping up their seasons, and horseman are shipping their strings south and gearing up for big winter stakes races at Gulfstream, Oaklawn Park and Fair Grounds.
But that doesn’t mean there are no top class races being run, and this Saturday Churchill Downs host a good one, with the running of the (G3) Chilukki Stakes. The race is open to fillies and mares age three and older, racing one mile on the Churchill dirt.
There’s an excellent field of nine going to the post with no heavy favourite and lots of good betting value.

2023 Chilukki Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Hidden Connection Race Odds: 5-2
The tepid morning line favourite, Hidden Connection managed a career-best Equibase speed figure last out when running second in the (G3) Locust Grove Stakes on this same Churchill dirt course at a slightly longer 1 1/16 miles.
That result was her fourth runner-up finish in seven starts this year, all but one at the graded-stakes level. Conversely, she was off the board in three of those starts, with no wins that span. She’ll in fact be looking for her first graded-stakes victory in more than two years.
2023 Chilukki Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Hot And Sultry Race Odds: 7-2
Making her first start since May when she ran in the (G1) Derby City Distaff at Churchill, Hot And Sultry ran fourth in that seven-furlong sprint, but she was taking on the very best of her cohort. The top three included Goodnight Olive, who went on to defend her title in the (G1) BC Filly and Mare Sprint, and multiple-graded-stakes winners Wicked Halo and Matareya.
Compared to that race, she’s taking a big drop in class here. What remains to be seen is how she’ll fare in the first start off the long layoff.
Falconet Race Odds: 4-1
The very consistent Falconet has run first or second in nine-of-twelve lifetime starts, although she threw in a bit of a clunker last out in the Locust Grove where she was seventh.
On the other hand, she was very good one before that when she won the Groupie Doll Stakes at Ellis Park, finishing 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Hidden Connection in that one-mile race. She’s one that likes to come from a bit off the pace, and so she’ll be hoping they go fast early up front.
She Can’t Sing Race Odds: 8-1
Veteran six-year-old She Can’t Sing will be making her 39th lifetime start, and third consecutive Chilukki Stakes start where she comes in as the defending race champ.
While she has been competitive in her five starts since that race, hitting the board three times, she hasn’t been able to find the winner’s circle since, and it seems this year’s field is a bit tougher than what she faced in 2022.

On back class and overall speed figures Hidden Connection gets the slight edge in the field, but at the same time her lack of a win in the past two years and resume of runner-up finishes makes her a hard one to trust at low odds.
On paper no horse really stands out as the one to beat, with Hot And Sultry something of a wild card. That being the case, I’m willing to try and find a bit of value and play Falconet for the win. I’m hoping she gets a bit of pace to close into, and in looking at her last few, she seems to have been running in a good race, bad race cycle. If that holds, she could be sitting win a good one here.
